Short Rains and Steel Doors: Keep Frames Dry Before October
September showers expose bad thresholds. How to specify a steel door that sheds water, and what to fix on an existing leaf before the short rains thicken.
Nairobi’s short rains do not need to be dramatic to ruin a door: a 20 mm puddle at the threshold rusts the bottom of a cheap leaf and swells any timber still hiding in the opening. September is when you still have dry days to fix the floor and the frame.
Before the rains settle in
- The threshold should sit above finished floor so water runs out, not in.
- Do not bury the steel frame in wet screed and hope it “dries later”.
- Wipe the bottom rail after the first storms — red dust plus rain is abrasive.
- If you still have a timber main door, this is the month it starts to stick. That is a security gap.
On the showroom floor, look at the bottom of the leaf, not only the gold stripe. A pretty door with a soft sill is a wet-season problem.
If your porch slopes toward the house, say so before we quote. The door cannot fix a drainage problem the mason left behind.
